Oni Press, an indie comic book publisher in Portland, Oregon has announced a new “erotic and sex education imprint” that is “focused on positive, diverse, and approachable stories that reflect a wide variety of emotional experiences.” The Limerence imprint is launching with volumes 1-3 of OH JOY SEX TOY, a popular sex ed and sex toy review webcomic by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan. Oh boy, the joy of fun sex comics!
“We are a small, two-person comic-making team, and with Limerence we’re looking forward to reaching a broader audience of people who crave fun, sex positivity and puns in their lives. We’re publishing erotica and sex education comics that reflect the spectrum of human sexuality.”
The fusion of sex ed and comics is rare, but Sam Meier, of Fusion.net discovered some vintage, groovy sex ed comics from the sexual revolution. He found them digging through the library at the Kinsey Institute in Bloomington, Indiana, home of infamous sexologist Dr. Alfred Kinsey.
“Pouring through the archives, I found a copy of VD Claptrap,” she says. “The comic stars Ms. Wanda Lust and Captain Veedee-O, spacemen who travel the galaxy to rid the planet Venus of the “Kling-Ons” of syphilis and gonorrhea.”
“Sol Gordon was a psychologist and professor of child and family studies at Syracuse University who published Ten Heavy Facts About Sex in 1971. The comic was groovy and honest and packed with useful information for teens trying to safely navigate the Sexual Revolution. Which, naturally, meant it was loathed by many of their parents.”
