Sticky, A (Self) Love Story; The First Documentary on Masturbation

Sticky, A (Self) Love Story is a documentary about a touchy subject; touching yourself. Everyone masturbates but nobody talks about it. (“Hey Susan, how’s the masturbation going?”) So filmmaker Nicholas Tana decided to talk to people about “spanking the monkey,” “paddling the pink canoe, “petting the kitty,” and “sayin’ hi to the monster.”

Over 60 people weighed in on the subject including our sexologist buddies Dr. Carol Queen and Dr. Patti Britton, Sex Educator Ducky Doolittle, as well as  Anthropologists, Psycholgists, M.D.’s, Sex Therapists, Porn Stars, and Comics. A Priest even weighed in on the subject and said it was a sin. A Rabbi said it wasn’t.

The film also touches on the history of masturbation with the story of former Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders, who was fired after suggesting at an AIDS conference that masturbation be taught in school as an alternative to sex. Then there is the story of supremely talented Paul Reubens/Pee Wee Herman, whose career was ruined after a small town newspaper journalist in Florida (trying to make a name for herself) wrote about him masturbating in a porn theater. “Isn’t that what those places are for?” asks Circle Jerks/Black Flag’s Keith Morris.
Comic Janeane Garofalo, Porn Star Nina Hartley, and the notorious Larry Flynt all comment on “taming the trouser snake.” (“Men read Hustler with one hand,” he notes.)

The educational, entertaining and “gripping” movie is available to download for $3.99 on itunes,or here.
