Fetish Fashions

Today is International Fetish Day, so today we wanted to take a look at some fetishes that many people enjoy as part of creating their sexual fantasies.

Sexual fetishes or fetishism used to be considered a paraphilia (previously known as sexual perversion and sexual deviation) and were regarded as pathological or a mental disorder that needed to be treated.  These days, most fetishes are considered more of “an unusual sexual interest” rather than a paraphilic one (or deviant), and there is a debate over which fetishes, if any, should be classified in mental disorders diagnostic manuals at all.

So, if you have a sexual fetish, you don’t need to feel ashamed or guilty about it.  In a 2014 study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 26.3% of women and 27.8% of men admitted to having fetish fantasies.[i]  Sexual fetishes are only dangerous if they cause “significant psychosocial distress for the person or has detrimental effects on important areas of their life”[ii], or harms another being.

According to Wikipedia, fetishes that include clothing of some kind, or fabric, are the most popular fetishes (58.3%).

The most popular Fetish Fashions include:

Rubber

Rubber, Latex and PVC is a fetish attraction to latex clothes.  Rubberists is the term many rubber fetishes use to label themselves with.  Popular types of rubberwear include corsets, catsuits, hoods, thigh high boots, and inflatable clothing.  But, the item doesn’t always need to be erotic.  Some people are just attracted to the PVC itself including plastic raincoats, shower curtains and clear PVC items.  Liquid latex body paint allows you to paint on a second skin of latex on your body and be naked underneath.

Corsets

Corsets and tightlacing are quite common among the fetish scene, in particular corsets worn by female Dommes, and tightlacing as a masochistic practise made popular by Fakir Musafar.

Cosplay or Roleplaying

Cosplay (meaning costume play) is a hobby where people dress up in costumes for role-playing.  As a sexual fetish, role-playing scenarios could include secretary, schoolgirl and teacher, doctor and nurse, or a sexy maid.  Dressing as furry animals or Furries is another type of Cosplay fetish.

Uniforms

Uniform fetishism, much like Cosplay, is a sexual attraction to someone dressed in a uniform.  The most popular uniforms include: doctor, schoolgirl, police officer, nurse, French maid, sports player, waitress, cheerleader, Playboy Bunny and nuns.

Footwear

Shoe fetishism or retifism, is the sexual attraction to shoes (usually women’s shoes) including stilettos, boots, sneakers, socks and other footwear.  This fetish is related to foot fetishes and Chinese foot binding.

Leather

Leather fetishism is people who get turned on by wearing leather themselves or by others wearing leather.  The smell and feel of the leather is often an erotic stimulus, while leather uniforms and shining leather such as boots or patent leather are also popular. “Leather Culture” is a term used to describe the sadomasochism subculture of gay men, whereas pony fetish use leather bridles and other equestrian gear.

Fur

Fur fetishism refers to a sexual attraction to fur or wearing fur.  It was popularized by the novel Venus in Furs (1870) by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch whose name is synonomous with masochism.

Underwear

Underwear fetishism is a sexual fetishism for undergarments, either by wearing them, handling those used by others (such as dirty panties) or looking at someone wearing undergarments.  Lingerie is fairly mainstream and definitely sexualizes the person wearing it.  Popular lingerie items include panties, fishnet stockings and woman’s hosiery, bras, garter belts and more.

Gloves

A glove fetishism is a sexual fetishism where the individual is aroused by another person wearing gloves, or wearing them oneself.  Often this fetish is enhanced by the material: leather, latex, PVC, or nylon. Visual stimulation is further enhanced by the act of putting on or removing the gloves. Smell of latex, rubber or leather can also be a factor.

Spandex

Spandex fetishism is a sexual arousal to people wearing stretchy fabrics like leotards. Spandex are skin-tight and act like a second skin, leaving little to the imagination of the nude body underneath.  Superhero outfits, gymnast’s leotards, and zentai bodysuits are all popular spandex fetish fashions, in which the wearer may also enjoy erotic objectification.
