The global fashion house said, “Our 50th anniversary is all about giving back to our customers and to the communities who contribute to the success of our fifty-year legacy.” CEO Oscar Fendenkreis explained “Our commitment is to helping those are among the most in need. Perry Ellis International will match donations up to $50,000 for disaster relief in partnership with United Way’s Operation Helping Hands.”
The philanthropic campaign is “continually helping to rebuild lives in communities impacted by recent natural disasters, including children and families who still need assistance now more than ever.” The company felt that the government should be doing more for disaster areas such as Puerto Rico, but since they aren’t, decided to take matters into their hands and build continued awareness that people in these areas still need help.
The iconic brand includes Perry Ellis, Original Penquin, Laundry By Shellie Segal, Peony & Me, Jantzen, and John Henry. The company was founded by designer Perry Ellis, who was a 7th Avenue fashion sensation in the 1980’s with his “non-traditional, modern classics.” He won eight Coty Awards before succumbing to HIV/AIDS in 1986 during the AIDS epidemic in Manhattan at age 46.
In 1981, Ellis began a relationship with attorney Laughlin Barker Later that year, Ellis appointed Barker the President of the licensing division of Perry Ellis International. They remained together until Barker’s death in January 1986.
Ahead of his time in the alternative family planning department, in 1984 Ellis and his long-time friend television producer and writer Barbara Gallagher conceived a child together via artificial insemination. Their daughter, Tyler Alexandra Gallagher Ellis, was born in November 1984. Ellis bought a home for Gallagher and their daughter in Brentwood, Los Angeles, and would visit frequently. In 2011, Tyler released her first line of handbags using the name Tyler Alexandra.
The fashion company he founded was sold in 1999 in Miami and went on to makes millions. And now they are giving some of it back.
