NYC Cracks Down on Boobs And Cracks In Times Square

Police in New York City have cracked down on the growing number of semi-naked painted ladies in Times Square. The neighborhood, which is a tourist mecca, has become over run by topless girls who have had their boobs painted by body painting artist Andy Golub.

The crackdown is creating controversy, because toplessness in New York City is actually legal, but a new task force created by the Mayor is trying to shut the toplessness down. Although public toplessness is fine with me, after a recent visit to Times Square I have to side with the mayor. The bigger problem is what the NY Daily News described as “gross guys” filming and saying lewd things to the nearly nude ladies, which was out of control! Women get sexually street harassed on a daily basis in New York City, and the sexual harassment I witnessed in Times Square was too much! They should shut down the sexual harassers while they’re at it, and form a task force for them.

Also a problem are the psycho costumed characters who hit up tourist for tips, including “Angry Elmo” who yells at tourists who give him less than $5.00, and “serial butt groper Woody,” a character from Toy Story.

I did have to smile though when I saw a 12-year-old boy getting his first glimpse of a bunch of topless, nearly naked ladies. Apparently it was also his first public boner.

Photographer Sai Molchtari beautifully captured some of the painted ladies in a photo set for Gothamist.
