Coming In Oct: “Female Viagra” Approved by FDA

The FDA approved the sexual desire drug Fibanserin, rejecting it twice before due to side effects, which include nausea, dizziness, sleepiness, and fainting. But women’s sexual health advocate Even The Score argued that only a small percentage of women have these side effects, Viagra for men has side effects too, and the drug for women needs to be be approved. It’s about time, they say.

The drug, which will be sold under the name Addyi from Sprout Pharmaceuticals in October, will be prescribed for pre-menopausal women with HSDD or Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. According to statistics, up to 10% women have this disorder. (When I went undercover to research married men using the cheating site Ashley Madison, their main excuse for cheating was “My wife isn’t interested in sex.” Now they have one less excuse!)

The pill works a bit differently than Viagra, which affects blood flow to the man bone and gives him a raging boner.  Addyi stimulates sexual impulses in the brain. It is in the same family of drugs as selective serotonin uptake inhibitors, or SSRI’s such as Prozac. But Prozac-like drugs are notorious for knocking out a person’s libido. Addyi blocks certain cellular receptors from reacting to serotonin and increases libido rather than decreasing it.

Amanda Parrish, a clinical trial patient, reported that “it took two weeks to see the effects. And I didn’t have any side effects. I felt like I got my desire back to be intimate with my husband and we got back to the place we were when we were first married.” I’m sure that if the mostly male deciders at the FDA heard this from their wives, they would have approved it a lot faster.
