Meet the new Barbie: she’s now “petite”,”tall”, and “curvy,” as opposed to the “original” Barbie who was skinny with barely an ass, no stomach, boy hips, and tiny thighs. For decades when people described someone as looking “fake” they would say she looked like a Barbie Doll. It seems Mattel finally got the hint and has introduced the #TheDollEvolves collection of “fashionista” dolls in 4 body types, 7 skin tones, and 22 eye colors. We love Barbie’s new shades of black, brown, and bi-racial, finally reflecting what “real” women look like rather than someone’s blonde hair, blue-eyed “standard” of beauty imposed on young girls that started in the 1960’s.
For the last few years Bratz dolls have been kicking Barbie’s skinny ass because their look is more relatable to girls of all colors, sizes, and shapes.
We especially love the blue haired “curvy” Barbie, whose body proportions are really “normal” girl proportions. She looks like a cross between Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian. And she’s only $9.99!
“We were hearing that many thought that Barbie was out of touch,” said Evelyn Mazzocco, Mattel ‘s global brand general manager.
The typical Barbie, a white doll with unrealistic proportions, sent an impossible to achieve message to little girls about beauty.
From a psychological standpoint, the move by Mattel seems to “normalize” the real shape of women’s bodies. It’s about time.
